- Kevin DeYoung – Defining Discipleship Down
- by Denny Burk – April 12, 2010
Kevin DeYoung preached to the students of Boyce College last week, and it was outstanding. His text was Mark 3:7-19, and his topic was “Defining Discipleship Down.” The title is a riff on Daniel Patrick Moynihan’s 1993 article “Defining Deviancy Down.” This is a must-listen. Brian Payne
Assistant Professor of Christian Theology and Expository Preaching
B.S., M.A., The University of Alabama; M.Div., Th.M., Ph.D., The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
Professor Brian Payne comes to Boyce College with a diverse array of life experiences and education that will aid him in the classroom at the college level. He played football for the University of Alabama from 1986-1990. After his playing career, he had the opportunity as a graduate assistant to coach “strength and conditioning” for the University’s football, basketball, baseball, and golf teams. It was this opportunity to work with college students as a graduate assistant coach along with being a featured speaker for the campus chapter of the “Fellowship of Christian Athletes” that he began to sense his call to vocational ministry. Professor Payne has also served at Big Oak Ranch, a Christian children’s home, as “Transitional Director” of a pilot program designed to prepare high school graduates for college life.
In addition to these experiences, he has also coached and taught at a Christian high school, worked in the business world, and pastored and served interim pastor positions. While working on his M.Div., Professor Payne had the privilege of serving a three-year internship under Dr. Al Jackson, one of the great pastors and leaders in Southern Baptist life, at Lakeview Baptist Church, in Auburn, Alabama. Professor Payne’s desire is to teach young, aspiring pastors that when there is faithful preaching of the Word and administration of the Ordinances and church discipline, the church is present and vibrant; when those are absent, there is no church.
