Youth Ministry

Youth Ministry Christian Service

I. What is the Purpose of Youth Ministry (YM) Christian Service?

The purpose of Youth Ministry Christian Service is to provide the student an opportunity to observe and participate in an effective Youth Ministry. This field education opportunity serves as reinforcement to what is taught in the YM classroom.

II. Who are the participants?

All students currently enrolled in a CYM course.

III. Where is the YM Christian Service to be completed and how much time is involved?

A. Those students who are interested in pursuing Youth Ministry as a career are required to serve at an "approved site" three (3) hours per week beginning the second week of the semester in which the student is currently enrolled.

B. Those students who are not interested in pursuing Youth Ministry as a career may, with instructor’s approval, choose to serve three (3) hours per week at a church of their choice. The church must agree in writing to supervise and evaluate the student according to course guidelines.

C. Students who are currently employed full time as a Youth Minister at a local church may fulfill the requirements at that church with documented evaluation from a designated supervisor according to course guidelines.

D. Students who reside over fifty miles from the school, many make special arrangements with the instructor.

IV. Am I required to join the church where I serve my Christian Service(CS)?

No. Students are encouraged to be faithful at the local church while fulfilling CS.

    V. How is the YM Christian Service grade calculated?

Each Christian Service supervisor submits a mid-semester and final semester recommended grade which includes: (1) hours per week served (2) performance evaluation of ministry responsibility and (3) additional recommendations. The supervisor submits his/her recommendation to the instructor who is responsible for calculating the final grade.

VI. What percentage of the final course grade is determined by YM Christian Service?

Though this may vary from course to course, usually it is 5%. See syllabus for a more specific answer to this question.

VII. How does the instructor know when the student is serving?

Each student is required to submit in writing the name of the site, the site supervisor, and the specific ministry responsibility. This written document is submitted to the instructor during the second week of class.
