- Kevin DeYoung – Defining Discipleship Down
- by Denny Burk – April 12, 2010
Kevin DeYoung preached to the students of Boyce College last week, and it was outstanding. His text was Mark 3:7-19, and his topic was “Defining Discipleship Down.” The title is a riff on Daniel Patrick Moynihan’s 1993 article “Defining Deviancy Down.” This is a must-listen. I grew up just south of Kansas City, Missouri in Lee’s Summit. All of my family is from West Texas, where much of my family still lives. I attended Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri and recieved a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies. What drew me to Louisville was Southern Seminary and their firm belief in the Bible as the inerrant Word of God. I was called into ministry as a young teenager, and look forward to ministering in a church as a senior Pastor. I have worked in churches as youth interns, interim pastors, and minister of music.
I currently serve at Carlisle Avenue Baptist Church. My wife and I first became aquainted with the church when I assumed the role of interim music minister. We got more than we bargained for, and have chosen to invest our lives with the body of believers there. I married Katherine in the summer of ’06 and have one son, with another baby on the way. The Lord is so kind to us!
I love my job because I believe in what’s happening here at Boyce College and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. I count it a privelege to serve the Lord here.

I grew up in Murfreesboro, TN so I am a transplant to Louisville. I came to Southern Seminary in 2009 to pursue a Master degree in Church Planting. After graduating from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville with a BA in Communication Studies, I wanted to come to a place to train and learn about God’s word in depth. Southern Seminary and Boyce College is all about training God’s people for the church.
Whether God has plans for you to work in the church or serve Him in any capacity, I want to help you plug into what He has for you. I work as an admissions counselor for Boyce College and I am all about what this school has to offer the church of our Lord. Let me know if I can answer any questions or help you make the transition to college easier.

My name is Chris Fowler and I am originally from Arab, Alabama, where I graduated from high school in 2000. Yes, I did say Arab!
Upon graduating from Mississippi State University with a BBA in Marketing in 2006, I returned to Alabama to work for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. During this time I met my beautiful wife Jana and we were then married in 2007. During this time I served as interim pastor to students in two churches and then in August of 2007 began serving a church full time as minister to students. During this time I began attending seminary through an extension program, however felt from the beginning that studying on campus would be a better fit for me.
In the summer of 2009, Jana and I welcomed our first child, Ella Grace. Being a parent has been a true blessing and we have enjoyed every moment of it, even the sleepless nights. In the spring of 2010, the Lord opened the doors for my wife and I to move to Louisville and Southern Seminary. I will be pursuing a Master of Divinity in preparation for church planting, while Jana is pursuing a Master of Arts in Biblical counseling. In addition, I have been blessed and honored with the opportunity to serve as an Admissions Counselor for Boyce College. I enjoy working with current and prospective students as they seek where the Lord would have them prepare for ministry through biblical and theological training.

During my senior year of high school I began to develop what I believe to be a God-given desire to pursue a job based in or around the ministry of God’s people. In order to best do this I knew that a biblical education would be necessary for me to receive. However, for the first year of my college career I chose a different path, during which I went to a college in the University System of Georgia. After this inaugural year of my college career, God gave me a greater desire for vocational ministry as I served as a youth ministry intern at my home church. This is when I began my search for a college that could train and teach me to best minister to people of God.
After speaking with several different people, including my pastor, and doing a little research of my own, I ran across Boyce College. Due to Boyce’s affiliation with The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, which is one of the premier theological and academic seminaries in the world, I had no choice but to investigate opportunities to attend such a theologically robust institution. After seeking council from my parents, I arrived at Boyce in the Fall of 2007.
I am now a sophomore at Boyce and have experienced substantial growth in my spiritual walk and have full confidence that Boyce College is where God would have me during this season of my life. I hope that you, too, will consider attending Boyce College as you seek to learn about God and His will for your life.

I am currently a junior at Boyce College. I am a 2007 graduate of Corbin High School in Corbin, KY. I am studying Biblical Counseling. I first learned about Boyce my senior year of High School. After visiting a variety of colleges I was pleased to discover that Boyce was the place the Lord had prepared me to attend.
I love the community and fellowship with other believers Boyce has to offer. The students and staff at Boyce are truly in love with Jesus Christ. They are serious about the call to impact the world with the gospel. I know the things I am learning in and out of the classroom here at Boyce are equipping me to be a young woman who seeks hard after the Lord. I sincerely pray you will consider Boyce as you seek to discover the specific call the Lord has placed on your life.

When I graduated high school in 2008, I did not know what I wanted to be “when I grew up,” or where I wanted to attend college. I knew one thing for certain though: I was not going to attend Boyce College. I decided to stay home in South Alabama and attend a local community college. I had a good job, and living at home saved a lot of money. By the end of my freshman year, however, God had changed my heart. I knew that God was calling me to some area of ministry and that Boyce was the best place to equip me. Although I was uncertain of where a ministry degree would take me, I applied in May and moved to Louisville in August. Moving to Louisville was a big step, but one that the Lord has blessed. I am a Biblical and Theological Studies major. Since attending Boyce, I have grown spiritually and have had many opportunities for ministry and leadership. If you are looking for a solid, Biblical education taught by professors who not only love teaching, but love the students that they teach, then Boyce is the place for you!

I graduated from high school in May 2009, and I am a sophomore at Boyce this year. My college decision was long and difficult, and at the last moment God changed all my plans and led me to Boyce. I am currently studying missions. God has placed a passion in my heart for the nations, and what drew me to Boyce was the emphasis they place on the Great Commission. Southern Seminary and Boyce are commited to training up Godly men and women. I have grown spiritually in my first year at Boyce, and I am excited to see what else God has in store. My prayer is that you will consider Boyce, and be open to God’s calling in your life.

I was home schooled through the eighth grade, and journeyed through public schools during high school. While there, I began to feel the Holy Spirit leading me toward serving in full time ministry. During this time, I began a search for schools that would provide a suitable atmosphere for not only learn solid theology, but also servanthood.
I heard about Boyce College from a close friend my junior year of high school. He moved to Louisville to attend, and after visiting him on two separate occasions, shadowing classes, and talking to other students I made the decision to come in the fall of 2009. I am studying Biblical and Theological Studies hoping to serve Christ through pastoral work and spiritual leadership in whatever context He chooses. Boyce has been the perfect place for me to pursue this calling. The faculty is zealous for gospel ministry, the students are passionate about their neighbors and the nations, and the studies are sanctifying and convicting. Boyce is a church serving, gospel centered, mission minded college, and I hope that you consider Boyce as you prepare to serve our Master in His service.

I am from the Nashville area and graduated from Donelson Christian Academy in 2008. This will be my sophomore year at Boyce. My middle name is Jacques but try not to hold the Frenchness against me. I enjoy backpacking, painting and long walks on the beach.
Contemplating the call to the ministry led me to the mentality of “all or nothing”. I wanted a solid conservative college to help prepare me for the future. I was unable to find one as unique as Boyce College. Every class is completely driven by the gospel and saturated with the Scripture. I did not want to waste time in vain classes that were not related to my degree. The courses I have taken have aided me in evangelism, strengthened me in the Lord, and fueled my passion for the Word.
If you don’t want to waste your college years- Boyce is for you.
